The stars aligned over the weekend in Adelaide for the pop culture expo Supanova. Huge stars including the legendary Stan Lee and the up and coming Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things visited Adelaide for the first time.
Why you don’t want a birthday present from Stan Lee
The former Editor in Chief of Marvel Comics graced us with his presence over the weekend with Panel session on both days. Creator of Spider-Man, The Hulk and many other Marvel heroes is still as crazy as his characters. Hundreds of fans packed into the crowd to hear from the legend himself and possibly be lucky enough to ask him a question. Many stories were told of Stan’s life, career and hilarious antics including the time he promised his friend a Bentley for his birthday only to present him with a framed picture of one instead.
The way Stan tells the story of how he created Spider-Man is an inspiring tale that reflects his never give up attitude. His boss had told him it was the worst idea ever but Stan published it anyway in the last issue of Amazing Fantasy and it became a huge hit. Since then he has technically become the highest grossing actor of all time as a result of his Cameos in Marvel Films. There is a very long list of all the characters he plays but he is always there for those with a keen eye to spot.
Tam Tams, Starburst Snakes and Live Rapping with Millie Bobby Brown
The loveable young actor who plays our favourite character Eleven from Stranger Things, Millie Bobby Brown attracted crowds as large as those for Stan Lee on Sunday. The Q&A Panel session helped us get to know what it’s like to work with all the cast and have your head shaved to become the ‘Weirdo’ El. For her first time in Australia the inevitable question about Australian food was asked. Her favourites, while she may have called them Tam Tams at first, were Tim Tams and Starburst Snakes that we can all agree are pretty damn good.
Season 2 of Stranger Things is here and one fan had learned all of the words to the Season 1 Recap Rap that Millie performed on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. To everyone’s applause Millie invited the young fan to perform it live with her on stage impressing the entire audience and even Millie herself.
Cosplay and Corgis with Kamui Cosplay
Sveltana “Kamui” Quindt was the International Cosplay guest at Supanova, visiting all the way from Germany. She has been Cosplaying for 14 years and started back in 2003. She has come a long way as many cosplayers have and it is because of her own journey that she loves to help others along their own. Kamui has been lucky enough to turn her passion into her career along with her partner Benni Schwarz, with her tutorial videos and books helping the novice and experienced alike learn something new.
At Supanova Adelaide this year Kamui hosted a Q&A panel on the Saturday where audience members could ask anything they wanted to know from stories about her two Corgis Zelda and Midna to her extensive experience with cosplay for all the tips and tricks. On the Sunday she led a Twitch Live stream for some walkthroughs on how to make foam Armour and props.
Adelaide marks the last stop for Supanova Expo this year but will return in April next year for it’s first stop in Melbourne. Here are some of the amazing cosplay we saw over the weekend and the winners of the cosplay competitions.
