Spirits of Carter Mansion is nominated for Tabletop of the Year at the Australian Games Awards (AGAs). This is a game about spirits going about their immortal business in Carter Mansion when the neighbour’s child kicks a ball into the mansion. Players take on the role of the spirits and have to decide how to react. Gamers Classified spoke with Cutlass Boardgame Lead Designer, Keith D Franks III about his reaction to being nominated and the idea behind this title.

GC: What was your reaction to being nominated?

Keith: I was very surprised to get the nomination. I was honestly not expecting to actually get recognised as there is so few Australian game designers.

GC: In other games, players typically battle against spirits but in The Spirits of Carter Mansion, you get to play as one. How did you come up with this idea?

Keith: I wanted a way to include a haunted house theme without following into the popular trope of scared kids wandering into the big house (like King’s IT for example). Instead I wanted a brave kid to march into the house and the players to have to try and protect / scare the kid.

GC: Why are there do many spirits in Carter Mansion?

Keith: Usually haunted houses have this big elaborate horror backstory that sets up the reason for so many human souls trapped in the house, whereas in Spirits of Carter Mansion the story is actually about a family that raises 3 kids, that eventually grow up and move away. The parents not wanting this huge empty house by themselves, eventually move out to something smaller but don’t sell it. Over time the house, being peaceful and empty, fills up with souls as they wander about the neighbourhood, until the neighbours’ kid kicks a soccerball in through the upstairs window disrupting their unrest.

GC: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Keith: Make sure you have a look for the Kickstarter for Spirits of Carter Mansion as it will be funding the physical print run for the game, and make sure you check out Cutlass Boardgame and Spirits of Carter Mansion on Facebook so you can keep up to date with everything we’re working on!
