During last night’s Pokémon Direct livestream, we were treated to more details about the franchise’s upcoming Switch title: Pokémon Sword and Shield. And with a release date of November 15, this next instalment is not too far away.

We got our first looks at new Pokémon, new battle mechanics and, of course, the new Legendaries – the Internet was quick to memeify these good boys.

Pokémon: Breath of the Wild

Apart from these new details, we were also introduced to a new area of the Galar Region called: the Wild Area. This area definitely gives off some Breath of the Wild vibes and is filled with roaming Pokémon that will appear depending on what location you’re in.

The weather will also determine what Pokémon you will encounter, as you will travel through rain, snow and even sandstorms while exploring this area. You may also be glad to know that you can finally move your camera freely in a Pokémon game! But unfortunately, it seems to only be available while moving through the Wild Area.

What’s to come for Pokémon’s 8th Generation?

Four new Pokémon were revealed during last night’s livestream and as usual GAME FREAK created some adorable Pokémon that the Internet easily went crazy for. But the big winner seemed to be the little sheep Pokémon: Wooloo.

With fan art of the little sheep taking over, it was hard not to see why this little guy is so cute.

But I must say, Mareep and Wooloo do look like cousins.

Despite the Wooloo hype, the edgy looking raven Pokémon, Corviknight was a close second for many.

The other reveals were the Grass type Gossifleur and its evolution Eldegoss. Plus, the snapping turtle inspired Water and Rock type: Drednaw.

Prepare to Battle Huge Pokémon

Dynamax is the new battle mechanic coming to Pokémon Sword and Shield and what it brings is some Godzilla-sized Pokémon. This mechanic can be used once per battle and will only last three turns. But for those three turns a Pokémon of your choice can turn into a giant version of itself with powered-up abilities.

Dynamax can also be used out in the Wild Area to play a feature called Max Raid Battle. Four players can team up to battle against wild Dynamaxed Pokémon and some Pokémon will only be available to be caught after they have been defeated in a Max Raid Battle. But during these battles, only one player can Dynamax one of their Pokémon – I hope to see someone throw out a Dynamaxed Magikarp in the future.

It isn’t Pokémon Without a Rival

The livestream also introduced a few new key characters but each fill the role that any Pokémon game normally has. You have your rival Hop; Champion Leon; Professor Magnolia; and Magnolia’s granddaughter Sonia.

But with all this new information, what are you looking forward to in Pokémon Sword and Shield?

When I’m not addressing my addiction to Overwatch, I like to dabble in the odd JRPG with some favourites coming from the Final Fantasy franchise. I’m a sucker for games with great stories and fantastic music but I also love a good nostalgia trip with some oldies but goodies. I’m currently studying Journalism at the University of Technology Sydney and as a video games enthusiast, I love being able to report on them to my heart's content.
